Since chimps can eat monkeys we can eat lobsters. This does not mean they do not have the same potential that monkeys have for becoming apes. We just have to selectively breed them for intelligence over a lot of generations, then teach them to use tools, then language, then math, then design [maybe not in that order].
Their primary sense really is smell, so it will be hard for us to communicate. Look to the blind. Also, when we eat lobsters, we drop them in boiling water which is kind. Research and breeding should not result in torture of the individuals.
