Dots Make Pictures

Do you see dots before your eyes when you look at the picture on this page?  
you would if you looked at the picture through a special magnifying glass.
When pictures are printed in books, the patches of color and the shades of 
gray are really many, many tiny dots.
The picture on the next page shows you how dots make a clown's face.  Where 
the colors of his face are light, the dots are far apart.  Where the colors 
are dark, the dots are close together.

[reminds me of something I suggested earlier today:  intensity is type of 
substance, depth is its frequency-wavelength-or-color, which might be useful 
in optical devices and filters]
