Vacuum tubes do have one big advantage over transistors; transistors are
susceptible to EMP, but vacuum tubes are not. A friend told me that after
the fall of the Soviet Union, we found out that a lot of Soviet military
tech used transistors but had vacuum tube backup. The Soviets had continued
to develop vacuum tube technology and had managed to greatly reduce their
size. Once the Soviet Union fell, those miniaturized vacuum tubes made it
to the US and are in part responsible for the resurgence of tube amps.

Does anyone know if this is true?

<trivia mode>By the way, the reason a guitar distorted through a tube amp
sounds better than a guitar distorted through a transistor amp is the way
the overtones of the sound are distorted. One distorts the odd overtones
and the other distorts the even overtones. I don't remember which is which,
though...</trivia mode>
