I have always had good luck with AMD. My guess would be power supply
problems or even electrical problems with the house wiring. I ALWAYS
recommend a surge suppressor strip at the very least and even a UPS if you
can afford it.
I would also check out AMD's recommended power supply size. Some local
computer stores around here try to get by with using a 250 watt power
supply, and most CPU's at GHz or better need a 300 watt power supply (this
is a guideline, not a absolute rule.) Having a insufficient power supply can
cause a whole boatload of problems.
Even if the local computer store is saying that it will be full price to
replace the CPU and motherboard, I would bet that both are still under a
manufacturers warranty.
