Gautam, Michael and Sonja all gave good answers.

I'm going to throw my $0.02 in now, and I apologize if I shock or offend
anyone, however mildly.

1) If you're wearing a thin dress shirt, wear an undershirt under it for
the reasons given by Gautam and Michael. (I'll add that many dress shirts
are thin enough that if you're not wearing an undershirt, your nipples may
be noticeable at times. Most people don't want to see a guy's nipples
under his dress shirt.)

2) If you're wearing a 100% cotton polo, don't bother. The polo should
be thick enough and sturdy enough to absorb the sweat, and you don't need
the extra layer under a polo.

3) If you're not going to wear a tie either way, you're better off going
with the polo, IMO.

4) If you're going to wear a dress shirt without a tie, and you plan to
leave the top button unbuttoned, I'd recommend a v-neck undershirt, rather
than a crewneck. I personally think it looks dorky when someone wearing
a dress shirt and a crewneck undershirt has the top button undone so you
see the collar of the undershirt.

Around here, Dan wears just a tank top most of the time when it's warm
enough, but if he's going to a restaurant, he changes into a polo. And
he's wearing shorts almost all the time. He wears jeans for yardwork, to
protect his legs, and he wears slacks if I ask him to. (Once last month,
and I'll ask him to wear some Saturday when we go out for our anniversary.
I may pick out what color polo he wears for that.) Then again, this is
Austin, so in 99% of the places we're likely to go, he can get away with a
tie-dye, shorts and Birkenstocks. (And that sort of ensemble goes very
nicely with his long hair.)
