Fear, horror, dread and pain are all mental states. Deliberately inducing massive amounts of those within the AI would be torture, right? It becomes even easier if the AI is an Eganesque Copy of a person complete with simulated body - there are plenty of ways to simulate physical tortures of such a simulated body.
