Nope. That's not it. What I believe is happening is that the dos drivers are
loading first before Windows starts, which overrides Windows ability to Plug
and play drivers for the cd-rom. This provides backward compatibility for
older programs that expect to see DOS driver CD-ROM'S

If you want to use DOS drivers (It is not a requirement) you can use newer
DOS drivers that comes with Windows.

To test out my theory try this:

Edit with notepad c:\config.sys . add "; " no quotes to any line that looks
like this: 

device=c:\xxyyyzz\cdromblabla.sys /d:cdrom 
 
Of course it will look different, but it will contain /d: in the line.

; device=c:\xxyyyzz\cdromxxyr.sys /d:cdrom 

Save the file, then restart your computer. See if your CD-ROM comes up. If
not, go to control panel and run Add Hardware. Run through that wizard.
If this does not work, edit that file again, take out the ;, then reboot.
The next step is to update drivers. Talk to me if this is necessary.
