I use them only very rarely, myself. A slight variation, however, is more useful. A sort of genetic algorithm scoring system. You assign scores based on whatever (key words, people's names, etc.) and scores, plus or minus. Then you read those messages with the highest scores first, and stop once you run out of time or find you've reached a score level where it is no longer worth reading. A threaded mail reader is great, too.
