Here are a couple of sites that I skimmed - the first
is from a translation of a 1912 (German?) Catholic
scholar about "Semites" which states that Arabs are
'Arabaic-Abyssinian Semites' and Jews are 'Chanaanitic
Semites':

The second is actually about the Phoenecians and has a
section on Semitic languages; it is run by a Lebanese
'Melkite Greek Catholic' who now lives in the Research
Triangle (NC). This is a huge site, and has won the
Britannica Award; it is also recommended by The
History Channel. (Lest there be snarling in the
ranks, I quote a statement from his homepage - "The
Bible is a book about faith and not about history.")
http://phoenicia.org/semlang.html

The latter's section on Mediterranean history looks
interesting too.

Debbi
who is spending entirely too much time 'surfing!
