[Sort of on-topic with some of the "American versus European" threads which have appeared here.

Today in History Rare is the time when we pass up a chance to diss our favorite Hollywoodland whipping boy, Kevin Costner. We shan't today. One of his vanity productions along the way was about a post-apocalyptic America which was saved by a guy who gains stature because he's wearing a postal uniform he ripped off the corpse of a deceased mail carrier. Despite your incredulity I am not making up that plot scenario. The film -- directed and starring you know who as "The Postman" -- was truly heinous. Which is not to say that I don't admire the good work of those who daily battle poison ivy and mean-spirited cocker spaniels to see that our snail mail gets delivered. All of which leads up to today's boffo historical factoid. It was on this date in 1868 that U.S. Postmaster General Alexander Williams Randall approved standard uniforms to be worn by all mail carriers. - c d kaplan, The Culture Maven mailto:cdk@;insightbb.com
