From: "Robert Seeberger" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>Well, after reading your post I took some time (a couple of days) to think about this.... and feel in this particular situation, you're right. This was a very public problem and the list itself was in a tremendous uproar over it. IMO, Eileen should have told us what she was doing, even if it would have obviously started a complete sh*tstorm from the list. (Which is not to say that I think she should be taken to task for it now... what's done is done.)

After all the argument on the list about Mark, and he did have his
defenders, its pretty sneaky to kick him and not tell anyone.
I saw a lot of back and forth, but stopped reading the list or posting here when (among many other reasons) it became apparent to me that anyone could attack the list with impunity and get away with it. Would someone be so kind as to provide a brief "official" rundown of how we're planning on handling this kind of thing in the future please? To the list at large, please don't take this as a cue to open up an unfinished debate -- I really just want to hear what, if anything was resolved a couple of months ago.Its not that I dont understand why he was kicked. I could have even agreed with it under certain circumstances. But it seemed to me that it was well established that we would do something of that magnitude as a community and not behind the scenes.
And I never thought that one person could cause such deliberate havoc in my inbox. I simply don't think that such a massive disruption of our list should be ignored or waved away under any circumstances. I suppose you weren't a digest subscriber.... you might have felt differently about Mark's posting patterns if you had to wade through dozens and dozens of gibberish posts in order to carry on a normal list discussion. The reason why I never asked is because it never occured to me that something like that could happen on Brin-L.
I will admit that I have very VERY definite opinions on this subject. I do think that in general the group should not be informed about a subscriber's status... and Mark's case was obviously an exception. Not only that, but I think your comment about informing the group of such a drastic action is a bit disingenuous. You made your dislike for Mark pretty clear several times. Not that I have a problem with you personally, but the above quoted paragraph justifys the "hidden" actions as filtered through your personal prejudices.
In the interest of nitpicking, I don't have a problem with Mark personally (I don't know him at all) but with his behavior. But I know what you mean and don't disagree with you.
Rob, I guess the best response I can give you is that I respect you and your opinions -- enough to have listened carefully and thought seriously about what you'd said before responding. (I probably would have done the same if, say, Marvin had posted.) In the years I've been here, you rarely, if ever have responded to posts on this list out of anger or without at least some regard to people's feelings, and in my eyes, you have always been an examplar of the "IAAMOAC" philosophy, which is I think, the highest praise I can bestow. I think quite a few of us (myself included) would be well served by emulating you.I think you are a great guy Jon, but I think you are wrong to defend this.
(which means I think you're a great guy too.) *grin*
Jon
