While I agree with your conclusion that they aren't being harmed at present by such practices, your argument is faulty. The important figure is not how much damage YOU are doing, but how much damage is done by EVERYONE who does similar things. If everyone on every email list and newsgroup randomly chose one or two articles every few months to post, then it would be fairly easy for many people to read most of the content without visiting salon.com's page.
