The only figures I could find for Thuggee cult deaths stated that
"possible as many as 2 million" were strangled by the cult between 1550
and 1853 (i.e. between early Moghul times and the height of the British
Raj); and that 30,000 to 40,000 were killed a year since the founding of
the cult in the 13th century. Also on the religious deaths front, the
Aztecs sacrificed as many as 20,000 people each year (a figure roughly
comparable to the human sacrifices by the Gun Cult each year in modern
North America). Those are all scary numbers, but far short of the rate
of state murder in the Soviet Union.

I think the simple truth is that humans in general are much too prone to
killing each other given any opportunity or excuse, and there is no
shortage of such opportunities or excuses.
