How about, "Moderation is appropriate when the above are violated repeatedly"? (This would let one-time offenders off the hook with a warning, and only punish chronic abusers.)I think you first need to establish a set of rules. A few questions to be answered are:
1. What constitutes "repeated violations"? Two violations? Five? Ten?
2. Within what time frame do these "repeated violations" have to take place? A week? A month? A year?
3. Should the listowners be allowed to unilaterally make the decision to censor or remove someone, or should they only be allowed to do that after discussing the matter on-list and getting the list's approval?
4. If someone gets censored or removed, how long should that last? A day? A week? A month? A year? Forever? (This question is of particular interest to me, as the censors refuse to tell me (despite repeated requests) how long they intend to keep censoring my posts.)
5. If the censors are the watchers, then who watches the watchers?
BTW, the info area on mccmedia for brin-l lists the following warning:Something similar has been in the Etiquette Guidelines for years already, but consensus on the list was also that the listowners were not allowed to take action against a member without first discussing the matter on-list and getting the list's approval. Why should we now suddenly give the listowners carte blanche to do whatever they like, without getting the list's approval for it?
"This list seeks to be self-moderating, but spam will not be tolerated and personal attacks may result in administrative restrictions."
BTW, for all those who criticise me but see nothing wrong with the censors making decisions without consulting with the list: of the last four listowners (Eileen, Julia, Nick and me), I am the only one who has NOT ab(used) listowner powers to unilaterally take action against a member. (Eileen unilaterally removed Mark Constantino, Julia and Nick unilaterally dediced to censor my posts.)
Just thought I should mention that...
