Pretty much the same thing in a single guitar band. Everything hangs on the
melodic hook.

and Rob again:
I think that was a style that was popularised a bit during the sixties and
had just come back into vogue with the progressive set. It is used to great
effect on 'On The Silent Wings Of Freedom" from Tormato.
I would normally go back to my recordings of the early albums, but unfortunately I only had them on cassette tape, and those tapes were all destroyed in a horrible accident with a large magnet (I'm *still* not sure how my guitar amp got there...)

The only Yes I currently have is a CD of 90125. If either of you could point me to some .mp3's of specific songs, I'll take a listen.

Certainly manipulating volume to remove the attack of a guitar was done in the '60s both with a volume pedal and with the volume knob on the guitar itself, and a similar attack-less sound is what you get when you record a guitar part backwards (or more accurately, turn the tape backwards and then record the guitar part, and then turn the tape back to it's original direction for playback).

I don't remember any specific instances of that in early Yes, but then again it has been a very long time since I've heard most of that stuff.

Again, if .mp3's are available, I'll put on my audio-engineering hat and take a listen.
