Its a myth that blanks are *"safe"*.
They are very dangerous at close range and no one should even pretend
differently.
Wasn't it a blank that killed Brandon Lee during filming of The Crow?
From what I've been told, there are safe forms of blanks. Apparently theyare more expensive than regular blanks. These expensive blanks have been used in several theater productions in which I've been involved. I'm not sure exactly how they work differently from regular blanks...
The American Federation of Old West Reenactors
http://www.afowr.com/safety.html
allows only blanks "that DO NOT and CAN NOT fire any form of projectile which includes wax, cardboard or any other material, except powder."
Perhaps that's where the difference is?
And from The Old West Living History Foundation,
http://www.oldwest.org/saftyrul.html
"To test blank ammo for a safe firing distance, a white paper plate distance & splatter test should be performed by the MOA [Master of Arms]. If the blank ammo tested fails, dont use it. MRA blanks are recommended."
I couldn't find any other info in the internet re: MRA blanks.
Does anyone know anything about these "safe" blanks?
