Presumably because a strong, coherent European Union would provide a serious rival to the United States and would prevent the US unilaterally acting across the globe to provide peace and security using its own methods. Even I can see that it might prove worse partioning the power of the West / Developed World / Whatever between two approximately equal groups than having leadership provided by a single unrivalled superpower. On the other hand, hoping that the US will continue indefinitely far into the future to be as interventionist and engaged as it current is might be seen as putting all of our eggs into one basket.
