> I am considering buying two books on Red Hat Linux 7.2:
Do you know that RH 8.0 has been released, and it is a fair bit different from 7.x?
Yes and no. Yes, I know RH 8.0 has been released, but no, I am not yet familiar with the differences. And right know, after spending some time sitting in the sun and enjoying a few glasses of red wine, I'm too lazy to find out. <Hick. Burp.> :-)
The reason I explicitly mentioned RH 7.2 is that I recently bought a box set of RH 7.2 Professional on the cheap (EUR 35, down from EUR 235). Given the price I already figured a new version must have been released, but for an absolute newbie who just wanted to get acquainted with Linux, this was an offer I just couldn't refuse.
Apart from some good reference material (hence those books), now I only need a computer to run it on. My work laptop on which I installed it is now back on active duty for work-related matters (running NT4), my private laptop won't run RH 7.2 due to video problems, and my desktop PC is too antiquated for it.
Guess I'll just have to promote my test PC at work (IBM 300GL, 300 MHz, 64 MB RAM) from a NT4 machine to a Linux machine. :-)
Although I eagerly buy reference books for languages, I've never gotten enough out of any operating system book to feel like it was worth buying. If you have a reasonably fast, reliable Internet connection (that's available when your Linux box isn't working!),
Oh, I got that Internet connection alright; no problem there. In fact, the main problem was that I couldn't get Linux to connect to the Internet! The network card I used wasn't supported, and I couldn't make sense of the workaround for it I found on the Internet. The other main problem was the also-unsupported sound chip.
you'll find a lot more useful problem-solving information on the net than you'll get from a book.
I tried that, but I almost drowned in the number of links. Information overload...
