On CNN Radio today, an embedded reporter indicated
that it appeared that Iraqi soldiers were dressing as
civilians, waving a white flag of surrender, and after
being turned away by Coalition forces (civilians
aren't really supposed to surrender) were going back
to their units to give targetting information to Iraqi
artillery.
In other news CNN.com reports that "Iraqi troops have
attacked U.S. troops on two occasions after signaling
their intent to surrender, Lt. Gen. John Abizaid
said."
To put it mildly, abusing the white flag of surrender
strikes me as a particularly vicious violation of the
rules of war.... but it seems an intentional way for
Saddam Hussein to try and restrict his forces' ability
to surrender to the coalition.
Meanwhile, Iraqi troops are again fighting bravely in
several locations... which again reminds us that few
people seriously thought it was going to be easy. At
this point, I definitely think that it is going to get
a heck of a lot worse for the Coalition before it gets
better.
