If I had to guess, I'd say that the culprit is... the Department of Homeland Security! :-)
TechTV relayed a reminder from Homeland Security, telling Windows users to run Windows Update, to plug a leak that could leave a lot of computers open to a terrorist cyber-attack. The big TechTV shows have enough viewership to cause a "slashdot effect" in many of the sites they mention.
