Absolutely right! You make the case for taxing the rich more than
the middle classes or the poor.
People can barely make ends meet now have a hard time with new
taxes. Only the more rich can afford them. Moreover, it is evident
that a tax increase of $5000 on an income of $50000 will be felt much
more than a tax increase of $5000 on an income of $5 million. So tax
increases must be progressive.
Right now, about a third of US income goes to local, state, and
federal taxes. Even with an increase in tax revenue by one-twentieth
of US income -- more than current military expenditures -- this means
that the top marginal rate need not be above half or so for people
earning over one-sixth or one-quarter of a million dollars per year.
For people earning less than the average, the top marginal rate can be
considerably less.
