I find it terribly interesting that something as mundane as wheat can have

Or as mundane as milk. I'm lactose intolerant, meaning my body lacks (or has a much lower
than normal amount of) lactaze enzyme, which is needed in the digestion of lactose. It is
really amazing how many things have lactose in them. Ramen without the seasoning
packets has none; add the seasoning packets, and you add a significant amount of
lactose. The breading on fried chicken at a local chain here in KC has lactose in it. I have
trouble finding antihistimines I can safely take, because most use lactose as an inactive
ingredient, and at least one brand that formerly didn't, does now. A popular diarrhea
medication contains lactose, and if you didn't know you were lactose intolerant and took
that medicine, you would be making the situation much, much worse for yourself. And I
have to be very wary of any product that lists "natural flavorings" as an ingredient.

I can eat most of these with no problem (or at least very little problem) if I take
over the counter lactaze enzyme pills, although more often I just avoid the lactose
in the first place. But having the lactaze pills as an option certainly comes in handy,
especially when I eat out and have no direct control over (or knowledge of) the
ingredients. Is there a similar enzyme tablet available OTC for wheat gluten, for those
times when you might want to indulge?
