I don't mind characters that I don't like or who aren't sympathetic.
What I can't stand are characters who are just pathetic.  Who can't
decide what to do or always do the wrong thing or can't see the
obvious when it is right in front of their faces.  Don't give me the
damsel-in-distress.  Give me the
damsel-in-distress-with-a-dagger-under-her-dress-who-isn't-afraid-to
-use-it-on-the-bad-guy!!

Unrealistic?  Perhaps.  But I read for escapism.  I can see enough
of that in my own life, I don't need to read about it too. 

Not that I want every protagonist to be perfect.  And it is great to
see a protagonist advance through a book/series to be non-pathetic.
