As I'm willing to bet our benefactor will confirm, once you have success with a book or series of books, there is hue and cry for follow ons. The first set of books was wildly popular back in the late '70s early '80s and I'm sure Donaldson felt a great deal of pressure to write a second series. For all the complaints about the anti-hero, Donaldson's fantasy world is a compelling place to visit. Personally though, I didn't enjoy the second series nearly as much as the first.
