There was a time that I worked with these patients with ulcerative colitis. At the time, the most radical treatment was a surgical procedure called "ilea-anal pull-through " (spellings all wrong, but you get the picture). The name says it all. I assisted on this procedure on a weekly basis. It was the first time I saw sunshine where the sun don't shine...
In particular what I remember was how the large intestine was "gutted" (pun intended) and laid out on a platter, so the surgeon could see the diseased organ in its entirety.
