Plus which, a "cup" of coffee is only 5 oz. Most mugs are 10-11 oz. So
our "4-cup" coffee maker makes 2 mugs' worth. Which is enough if we
have one guest not my father-in-law drinking coffee; if we have more
than one guest, or my father-in-law is here, we need to haul out the
"10-cup" (or maybe it's "12-cup") coffee maker. (My FIL goes through a
lot of coffee, and dozes off at the drop of a hat if he doesn't get
enough.)

The "cup at a time" sort of coffeemaker will generally make one mug's
worth.
