What they're now doing is permitting each school to make up its own mind whether or not to permit headscarves. Which at least is an improvement over a total nationwide ban. The argument is, girls may be coerced into wearing the scarves, and even if they aren't, it's a sign of religious separatism in a nation that demands conformity even more than the US does. France is an extremely centralized country, governmentally. Anything that deviates from the norm is automatically suspect.
