However, I have also changed the backup mail (MX) receiver for our domains to a server that we control, so that it can also use spam-blocking tools that our DNS provider (our previous backup MX). Spammers have figured out that secondaries often don't have nearly as good blocking. By sending mail through a secondary, spammers bypass the "black hole" lists that are (in my experience) the best way to prevent spam.
This should be a largely invisible change for the list. The reason that I'm posting this message is that I'm trying, for now at least, very aggressive spam blocking on the secondary machine, since spammers usually target it. That could mean that if our primary server is off-line, some of you might discover that your mail to the list is rejected by the secondary. If so, the problem should go away as soon as the primary comes back on line. If this causes significant problems, I'll abandon it, but I don't expect that.
I've considered switching all of our mail to the virtual server where the backup runs now, since it is more reliable, but it is hosted at Verio, which leads it to be automatically blocked by a number of sites, simply because Verio's virtual servers are often abused by spammers. And that could mean undelivered mail, which is not good.
And so the battle continues!
