I think that is just a secondary effect that comes from not being able
to suspend belief. Some books just aren't going to work for everyone.

It grows on you as you read the series. The Gunslinger didn't exactly
float my boat but the series overall is really good.

That one is Bag of Bones and I agree. Too much like a romance novel
for my taste.

Everything's Eventual is a collection with a story I really like,
"L.T.'s Theory of Pets".
Black House (with Peter Straub) is a Dark Tower Mythos book and is
quite good.

Hearts in Atlantis is peripheral to The Dark Tower and is decently
good, but more in the Stand By Me sense than your typical King horror
story.

My favorite of the last few years is Dreamcatcher. It's a horrific
novel of alien invasion with a unique plot device in the form of
someone named Dudduits.
It almost broke my heart but on the other hand, who wouldn't like a
book that contains evil entities like "shit weasels". Thoroughly
wicked!
