In _Startide Rising_, there's a reference to the _Canaan Colonies_ that can be defended by the Tymbrimi. Maybe these are the colonies [notice the plural!] around Alpha Centauri. The plural suggests that there could be two [or three] of them, around desolate worlds in that system.
