Well, it's that post-scarcity economics thing. Not quite Banks' Culture but getting there. Housing, education, medicine, pensions are all wrapped up in the basic citizens' package. Someone can not work a day in their lives and be housed, fed, entertained and cared for to a basic package that is equivalent to being rich today.

To get more than that - like a chef making your food rather than a replicator - you have to cash in points that aren't quite like money but sort of do the same job. And to make those points you have to do some kind of service. Like serving other people...

Of course with Vernor Vinge's idea of the Singularity there is no intermediate stable zone like that. Instead there is a tipover point to the massively haves and the left behind...
