I realize this thread pretty much stopped at the end of February, but given that I'm about a thousand messages behind, I want to just toss this idea into the non-fray. Freedom of speech is the freedom to express any idea you want to express. Is there any idea that requires you to drop the f-bomb in order to express it? If anyone out there can think of one, I'd really like to hear it. Freed of speech is not designed to protect specific words. It's designed to protect the ability to express any idea, no matter how contrary to conventional wisdom or current political climate it may be. In other words, freedom of speech is not the freedom to speek any word you want, it's freedom to speek any idea you want. Since *any* idea can be expressed without the use of the f-bomb or other obscene language, the constitutional amendment which protects freedom of speech does not protect use of obcene words in the expression of that idea. Are there any lawyers or judges lurking out there? Perhaps someone with more experience in constitutional law might want to chime in here. I'd really like to know (and I'd be really surprised) if there are any court rulings which are counter to this argument.
