Marriage did not originate in the church, the church hijacked marriage from the state a long time ago.
One solution to the current disagreement would be to let the state marry whoever it wants and let the church bless whichever unions it chooses. One of the obstacles is that language, since church leaders generally seem to want to own the word "marriage" exclusively.
