Children ages 2-5 seem to be especially sensitive to colorings and
other additives. I know we were careful to keep my son away from red
and yellow colorings when he was that age. But as he got older he
seemed to be able to channel that stimulation into other more
tolerable behaviors.

According to my Ex, my step-daughter was stimulated by wheat products
and had to be kept away from them for a couple of years.
She called it an allergy, but I don't think that is quite an accurate
description.
