I can't recall the ending either.  I'm not sure whether I finished
the first book and forgot, or if I gave up part way through.  It
was an interesting WORLD, even if the particular story was not 
too engaging.  I did read the fourth or fifth book, _Gods of 
Riverworld_, just to see how the series turned out.  It was a farago, 
too.

I have a book, _Tales of Riverworld_, which is at least as good
as the one you're reading.  It consists of short stories by various 
authors, all set in Riverworld.  With all the characters of history
to choose from, many an author would wind up creating a long mess
like Farmer's original.  There's a lot to be said for having a
bunch of different visions, all limited in scope!
