Dr. Brin, you write a lot about the 5 primary memes affecting society, namely: Paranoia, Feudalism, Machismo, The East, and The West (Otherness).
I think I would add one more meme to your list, that doesn't seem to fit very well under any of the other categories: "Hate". Quoting Author/Journalist David Neiwart: <<http://dneiwert.blogspot.com/2004_06_13_dneiwert_archive.html#1087539778 08269406>> "Real hate, in the end, is about excluding, demonizing, and eliminating the Other. It finds its voice in sneering denigration and threats, focusing especially on depicting the Other as a disease or vermin or a source of betrayal, a threat in need of extirpation." It seems to me that the "Hate" meme is directly in opposition to the "Otherness" meme. What are your thoughts on the matter? ------ "You cannot cripple an opponent by outwitting him in a political debate, You can do it only by following Lenin's injunction: 'In political conflicts, the goal is not to refute your opponent's argument, but to wipe him from the face of the earth.'" --The Art of Political War (4thReichKlan Political Manual)
