Several threads are converging here: Deborah's message about the boorish car dealer who lost the sale to her mom because he unwisely ignored her preference for the (admittedly more old-fashioned) manual transmission is being played out again here in the boorish Fool's losing face because he unwisely ignored David Brin's preference for the (admittedly more old-fashioned) BASIC interpreter.
By the way, The Fool wasn't the only one who tried to "improve" Dr. Brin's choice because it was old-fashioned. But while most offered their suggestions as a sales clerk might, "you know, we also have that in blue, which would go well with your eyes...," a foolish few offered improvements as clucking masters chiding the student, "you have chosen poorly."
