I've noticed that a lot of people who are pro open-source can be
fanatical about it.

I could get into a discussion about what seems to work open-source and
what doesn't, if anyone else wanted to get into it. There are good
things about open-source, but it's not a panacea.

As for pro-Linux, there are some people who are fanatical about Linux
specifically, and others who understand the strengths and weaknesses of
various flavors of *nix. (One of my favorite User Friendly strips
illustrates this in a fun manner.
http://ars.userfriendly.org/cartoons/?id=19990523 or
http://tinyurl.com/4ach9 ). The Linux fanatics can be tiring. The
general pro-*nix people are more interesting to have an OS conversation
with.

The thing about Windows is that there are a number of apps available
only on that platform, and if you're going to be using one of those
(AutoCAD, frex), that basically dictates your OS.

I'm probably going to be getting a new computer before the end of the
year, and I'm wondering how many of the apps I use (and if all of the
apps I use frequently) are available for some other OS that can be put
on a Dell machine (because that's where I think it'll be coming from).
