Happens to all of us, especially when we find that we can earn a living with strong points of view!
I was tested on this quite recently, spending a weekend at a spiritual retreat in leadership with a main leader who said, almost in so many words, "Don't second-guess me, God is in charge here." Saw myself in him, though, as he seemed to endlessly explain himself, showing little understanding and even less openness to others' ideas. Nothing like identifying with someone who strikes me as an obnoxious jerk to bring me back down to size. Not that I'm suggesting you identify with anybody in particular. Oh, and it didn't help that at our final planning meeting, this fellow had been wearing his Bush-Cheney '04 shirt and taking calls from his precinct workers.
Today I finally began re-reading Dietrich Bonhoeffer's "Life Together" and was astonishingly pleased to find this very situation described so clearly that it was almost spooky how timely it was.
