Get out the vote efforts move numbers of voters. This is happening now. Large close states are getting advertisng, smaller close states are getting a larger share of GOTV teams.
A recent article on the electoral college are Will's argument that it helps elites who also have a somewhat broad geographic appeal, basicly repeating the founders arguments of avoiding the rule of the popular mob. The Discover article says each individuals vote is more important in an electoral system. That also implies that cheating is much more of a threat in this system. A party that believes winning is the only important thing can choose a state or two and hope to insert or delete a few thousand votes and change the results. Somewhat like disenfranchising elegible black votes in Florida. If you believe in democracy shouldn't you favor abolishing the Electoral College?
