After the oil crashes of 1973 and 1979, Brazil implemented
a policy of replacement of gasoline per alcohol. It was
so successful that for some time we had more consumption
in alcohol than gasoline [but diesel, propane, butane, etc
were still bleeding us to a coma]. 

When oil prices went down again, sugar prices went up and
we found new oil fields, this policy was reverted. But the
"alternative" is perfectly viable [unfortunately :-)]
