(1) What is the definition of "moral conservative"?
2B1ASK1. No, wait, that's the Masons...
If the term "moral conservatives" isn't well-defined, it is because it
is just something I typed while writing that message a few minutes ago,
without trying to come up with a defensible term.
What I mean are the kind of people who are probably Christian, probably
anti-abortion (but often not anti-war or anti-death-penalty, but what
do I expect? Consistency?), possibly support the "Defense of Marriage
Act," and so forth. People who would probably assert to a pollster that
"character" is important, but may not be able to give a good definition
of "character."
Having given that definition, I am probably revealing exactly the
disrespect for such voters that troubles them about my party.
(2) [Depending on the answer to (1),] Is it only their belief, or is
it a fact that [at least at the national level] the Democratic
party has abandoned them?
That, of course, depends on what it means for the party to have
"abandoned" them. What do they mean by abandonment? Is the mere fact
that the party may support or reject certain specific ideas with
which they disagree abandonment? Is there a way that the party can be
more sensitive to their feelings of abandonment? Or are they just a
bunch who will feel abandoned when an individual or group simply
disagrees with them? And if so, is there anything the party can do
about it, or do we just let the whole country go red and shut out the
lights down at party headquarters?
These are the kinds of questions that I believe the party needs to ask
and understand. Who are the people that the party has "abandoned?" What
do they mean by "abandoned?" Is it a potty-training thing, or what?
