Peggy was too annoyed at first to be funny, but later said that she wished she'd had the presence of mind to answer -- in her unaccented English -- that *she* spoke English, but that I didn't, because I was just a little something she'd picked up in 'Nam...
That's pretty good. I suppose it might have been outre to have her simply respond, "YEEEEESSS, I SPEEEEEAK EEENGLIIISH, ASSS WEEELLLLL ASSS (X) OOOOTHERRRR LAAAANGUAGEEEESS." X being, of course, whatever number is appropriate.
Not at all. After the Pittsburgh incident, we've both been a lot quicker on the draw when situations like that arise. A sleazy guy at her work asked her if she spoke Japanese. When she said no, he said "Damn shame." She immediately shot back asking if he spoke German (last name sounded German), and he said no. "Damn shame."
She has also answered in Spanish, which she speaks well enough to have served as one of our group's translators in Guatemala.
I also remember thinking that I could have answered "Yes, and I'm sure she's thinking some things in English right now that would curdle your milk..."
Gawd, I love that woman.
She have a brother?
;)
She does, and he shares her acid tongue.
He and I have had a ... difficult ... relationship over the years, but lately, as the family's other raving liberal, he and I have found common ground. This is much to the rest of the family's amazement, given the thorny nature of our relationship 'til now.
Jim is in a long-term relationship with a woman, so I don't guess that a relationship between the two of you is in the offing.
Blessings,
Dave
