"At long last, Sun Microsystems has delivered a new set of thin client
technology that could well push the slim computing devices into the
hands of the average consumer.

The article's speculation that "AOL, for example, could give consumers a thin client for free and then charge monthly fees for its "computing" service" must be something of a wet dream for Sun.

The "Ultra-Thin Client 170" is actually quite attractive. A darn sight
better than the bulky Sun Ray 100. It looks like a cross between an HP
"carbon" LCD monitor and the new iMac.

It's interesting how the design of Sun Ray enterprise appliances has
paralleled the design of Apple's iMac (The 100 was a big bubble housing
the computer and monitor, now the 170 is a round-cornered rectangular
slab). But Apple never released an iMac in the form factor of the Sun
Ray 1 (a "traditional" thin-client that sat on the desktop beside regular
monitor), and Sun never released a Sun Ray in the shape of half a soccer
ball with a monitor on a stick.
