A lot of the equipment they currently have is fine. I've seen M16A3s, M4A2s, M240s, and even 5.56mm miniguns, so in that dept they're doing fine...
But I found it interesting on the news the other night, when a soldier pointedly asked Rummy about insufficient protection on relatively mundane vehicles (mostly trucks), he him-hawed his way through the question and sounded like an idiot....
Mr. Rumsfeld's answer pretty much amounted to a rebuke to the soldier: "You fight the with the army you have, not the army you want." He has something of a point, though, with the whole "Ours is not to question why..." mentality.
