Warren,
OK, you've probably seen these at GeoCities and Tripod and such --
basically I'm looking to find some CGI that allows a domain owner to
set up Web pages, or rather open hosting to people who want Web pages,
something that includes quotas, pretty strict user control (no bizarre
scripts, etc.), and that might even require human intervention and
approval before a site-setup password is allowed.
Anything like that out there? SourceForge doesn't seem to have *quite*
what I'm after, and of course open-source is most desirable here. :)
What you're looking for is virtual web hosting software, but Googling
those words is a way to find lots and lots of people who do what you
want to do, for a living.
One place to start looking is
http://webadminmodules.sourceforge.net/?page=ISP+Software. Webmin is a
web-based front-end for *nix administration. Among the many categories
of add-on modules for it is "ISP Software", including "Host4Net", which
looks to be just what you need: "a complete web-hosting management
solution dedicated to small and medium hosting companies." And it's
free.
There is also "User Mode Linux," a kernel mod that allows you to run
multiple copies of Linux at once on a box -- each user could have a
separate copy of Linux to screw around with (or screw up, as may be the
case). That may be a bit more than you're looking for, and I don't know
what kind of administrative niceties exist to manage all those virtual
hosts.
Good luck,
Dave
