But you're not on LOCAL mailing lists that have 20 messages a day
telling us, "Hey, I went to volunteer at place X, here's the routine for
doing THAT one" and feeling guilty that I have 3 kids that I'm the
primary caretaker for, preventing me from going out and doing any of
those volunteer jobs that I'd be perfectly capable of doing.

We feel bad too. Teri is going in for surgury tomorrow, and I'm scrambling
to meet a deadline, so we have little extra time for volunteering. We have
spare room at the house, but feel uncomfortable taking in a group of
unvetted people. We have sent out word through our network that if they
know a family, we'd have the room to house a few people for an
indeterminate length of time, but I have to admit I'm selfish enough to not
be willing to take someone that no one can vouch for.

We're in a similar position. If my uncle lived in NO instead of Baton Rouge, and his son lived farther away than Shreveport, I'd be happy to take him and his wife in (even though I really don't know them -- they're kin, and that counts for something).

Best of luck to you and Teri. And you know they're going to still need help in a month, and some of the initial volunteer energy will be waning, so if it works out for you (or me!) to volunteer then, that'll still be good. (Cooking a meal for a family that's taken in refugees would help, right? I wish I liked to cook more than I do....)
