one of my favorite sf authors, theodore sturgeon, said, "90% of everything is crap, including science fiction". he was also great at writing the kind of science fantasy that i re-read whenever my stack of hard sf gets low enough. as long a market exists for fantasy series about unicorns, wizards or dragonslayers from urth, etc., the reality of that demand will drive even some hard sf authors to write for that market, and hopefully raise the content level to what fantasy was before the current crop of novels and media spinoff that, if nothing else are attracting new readers to the genre. a lot of the fantasy novels being published now are aimed at that target sci-fi audience. fortunately there are enough authors like brin to keep me my stack of books to read happily high...
I do love really good science fiction, but also enjoy good fantasy...after all, horses are far more likely to appear in fantasies than good SF! Except, of course, for the Jijo horse aunties and dear Tycho of Garth. Debbi Sunflower In The Corner Of His Mouth Maru :) www.greensm.org --------------------------------- We won't tell.
