Like all Delaware Inc's, they're legally forbidden from doing anything except maximise Google's share value. They may claim they're doing it "because supporting open source is good," but that's only because that claim maximises Google's share value. If more people called it out as the BS it is, they'd stop claiming it. Claims like that are why GSOC isn't a win for everyone.
