It's good to have a little coding problem every now and then. I have plenty of days where I do little or no actual coding, because there's something else that's more urgent, so it's really good to have a little Perl distraction to satisfy that part of my brain. I'm not that interested in prizes, but the discussions of relative merits of different solutions are where it gets interesting, useful, rewarding etc. It's a big learning exercise too, not that often that daily work involves squeezing every ounce of insight out of a particular problem, more often it's "make it work and move on".
